Get Rid of Fruit Flies

In today’s post I’m going to show you a quick ‘n’ easy method for getting rid of fruit flies.
This technique will kill the fruit flies, so if that bothers you, I’m sorry. Personally, I don’t care too much for the life of a fruit fly!

So, how do you get rid of fruit flies?
We’re going to be building a fruit fly trap from items that are readily available in most homes. You will need:
  • A small bowl
  • Vinegar (preferably apple cider vinegar but regular malt vinegar is fine)
  • Bleach or washing-up liquid

Having got the bits you need to construct your fruit fly trap, simply follow these directions:
  1. Pour some vinegar into the bowl. It should have a depth of around 2cm.
  2. Add a little bleach or washing-up liquid to the vinegar – only a tiny squirt is needed.
  3. Leave the bowl near to your fruit fly infestation.
This ingenious trap works so well because the fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar (vinegar is basically fermented ethanol, which is the same thing that attracts the pests to rotting fruit).

The bleach breaks the surface tension of the vinegar, which causes the fruit flies to be sucked under (a bit like quicksand) when they try to land on it and subsequently drown in the liquid.

For larger infestations, I would recommend creating two or three (and sometimes even four) traps scattered around the areas of fruit fly activity.

When the vinegar/bleach solution has killed around a hundred fruit flies or the bottom of the solution is packed with fruit fly corpses, simply empty the contents into the sink. And if you still have fruit flies buzzing around, make up a new solution.
