On this page, I will discuss some simple tactics for reducing and getting rid of chest acne. As well as chest acne, the following methods can also be used for acne on other areas of the body including the back, shoulders and buttocks.
What is Chest Acne?
Chest acne (or Acne Vulgaris to give it it’s correct name) is acne that manifests on or around the chest area. Acne, itself, is a skin condition that affects almost all of us at one time or another in our lives, however for reasons yet to be discovered, some people get more of it than others.
Acne is characterized by sore,red and inflamed bums and lumps on the skin. Sometimes they have a head (as in blackheads, whiteheads and yellowheads), which can be squeezed and popped, although it is better to let them be and allow them to drain themselves to reduce the risk of secondaryinfections and scarring.
Causes of Chest Acne
Each follicle has sebaceous glands beneath the surface of the skin that produce oil, which then travels along the hair and onto the skin. This oil, or sebum, is necessary because it hydrates, cleans and lubricates the skin. Sebum is produced even if the follicle is blocked resulting in an excess of oil within the follicle. This causes the follicle to enlarge and form a small bump on the surface of the skin and it is these bumps that we see as spots.Chest acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with microscopic matter such as dead skin (see diagram below).
Bacteria can also breed in the follicle resulting in an infection.
How to Get Rid of Chest Acne & Stop It Coming Back
By understanding the causes of chest acne, we can draw logical conclusions about how to combat it. All acne solutions fallinto one of the following categories:
- Keeping the skin clean to reduce the risk of follicles becoming clogged
- Reducing the amount of oil on the skin and in the hair follicles
The most important thing to do to get rid of your chest acne is to wash your body once or twice daily with a mild water-based cleanser. This will remove any dead cells from the surface of your skin. Do not wash more frequently than this as it could lead to you aggravating the acne and the skin around the acne causing increased inflammation. You can take this a step further by exfoliating your skin using exfoliating gloves or an exfoliating massager, however a simple wash with your hands is often just as effective.
Next, you should stop using oil-based cosmetic products such as your shampoo and shower gel as this can increase the amount of oil on your skin and cause more acne on your chest. Always read the label.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help get rid of chest acne. This includes eating healthily, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep. A healthy body reduces stress and stregthens the immune system, which will allow it to fight many afflictions, including acne, naturally.

If you suffer from severe acne, you should visit your doctor, who may refer to a dematologist (skin specialist). During diagnosis, your doctor may discover that your sebaceous glands are producing too much sebum and prescribe drugs that will reduce the amount of oil your body produces. Over-production of sebum is common with people going through hormonal changes such as teenagers and pregnant women, so the acne may just be a temporary side-effect of these changes and disappear when hormone levels return to normal.
