Removing stretch marks is not an easy task. We don’t like to admit having them in the first place. It’s the same with any bodily “imperfection,” we prefer to pretend it doesn’t exist – at least, not as far as others are concerned. But of course, they do exists for most people, and removing stretch marks is something that many of us face head on – and have great success with too!
So, what are these unsightly “things,” and why is removing stretch marks such an emotive subject? Stretch marks are exactly what they sound like; marks made by skin that has to stretch. It happens to teenagers (yes, really!), and it happens to pregnant women. It also happens to body builders and to men who drink too much beer, as well as just about every member of every society on the planet.
You can easily recognise these kind of marks. They are scars, purplish in color and often not too big in size, though a number of these marks can merge together to cover a large area. It happens when the dermis, which is an elastic layer of skin in the middle part, is stretched to its limits and breaks down.
Think of an elastic band stretched so far that it no longer has its elastic properties. It’s pretty much the same thing with skin. When your skin’s elasticity breaks down the skin tries to overcome the problem by reinforcing the affected area with collagen, a kind of connective tissue protein. The result is what we call stretch marks.
So, how do we get rid of stretch marks? Cosmetic laser surgery is probably the most successful treatment, but not the cheapest. Other ways of removing stretch marks include, cocoa butter as well as vitamin E oil. These are easy to get and not at all expensive. They work best on relatively new marks, and their effectiveness depends on several factors, including diet and lifestyle.
Your doctor may be willing to precribe a cream for treatment. Retin-A cream is the most commonly precribed. It works best on new scars that are less than one year old, preferably less. Used properly, the results can be very satisfying.
However, prevention is always better than cure. And while this may be an annoying statement to those of you already suffering, it can help to avoid further damage. Alway monitor you weight gain, especially if you know it will happen, as in the case of pregnancy. A healthy diet will help. Drink plenty of water. When you think you’ve drunk enough, drink some more. Eat vitamin and mineral rich healthy foods. Removing stretch marks is not particularly easy, but perseverance will bring good results.
