5 Ways to Get Rid of Unwanted Facial Hair

Random hairs on your chin, upper lip and other parts of your face can be very annoying and make you feel self-conscious. In this article we will offer five ways to help get rid of unwanted facial hair.
*Disclaimer this is not meant as a substitute for medical advice. You may wish to seek advice from your doctor or dermatologist before beginning any facial hair removal program.

1. Laser the hair away.

Laser is an option for getting rid of facial hair. Lasers target the melanin pigment in the hair and hair follicles to limit hair growth. Most people will have to go for several treatments for this to be effective. Usually laser achieves fairly permanent results as they change the quality and texture of the hair. Any hair that does return is usually thinner and paler.
If you decide laser hair removal is the best option for you make sure you pick a reliable salon and ensure that the doctor or technician performing the service is properly qualified.
If you are doing laser hair removal you should avoid tweezing, waxing or electrolysis for six weeks prior to the treatment. Waxing and tweezing temporarily remove the roots which laser is targeting.
Also, sun exposure needs to be avoided for six weeks prior and six weeks after the treatment as it can reduce the effectiveness and increase the chance of complications.

2. Get electrolysis.

Electrolysis is also a way to get rid of facial hair. Some people find it very painful though. Not having a mini mustache might be worth the pain to you but it is a personal choice. Also, it is individual preference as some people experience only a little discomfort while others find it quite painful. Electrolysis is done by inserting a needle into individual hair follicles. This means that each follicle is done one at a time so it is a lot of tiny needles in your face.
It usually requires several visits. Most people find that electrolysis offers the best results when used on the upper lip or eyebrows.
Electrolysis is also a fairly permanent solution to your facial hair.

3. Wax the hair.

Waxing is a fairly fast and easy way to remove unwanted facial hair. However, it is directly ripping the hair from the root so, you can imagine, it kind of hurts. Waxing can be done at salons or at home using home waxing kits.
The results of waxing are not long term. Some people find that waxing increases the instances of ingrown hairs.
If you decide to wax at home follow the instructions on the kit for how long to heat the wax for. Test that the wax is not too hot on the back of your hand before applying to your face. Use a popsicle stick or similar device that is often supplied with the waxing kit to apply the wax to the hair you wish to remove. Apply a cloth strip to the wax and rub it in well. Rub as hard as you can without hurting yourself. Leave it for about 10 seconds. Pull the strip off quickly against the direction your hair grows.
Sometimes your skin might be quite red directly after a wax so if you do not want a red mustache in place of a hairy one you may want to do this a day or two before a big event.

4. Bleach the hair.

Maybe you feel you could deal with your facial hair if it jut was not so dark and obvious. In this case you can bleach your facial hair. This is painless and won’t cause ingrown hairs. As with bleaching the hair on your head this requires some maintenance, of course.
You can get your facial hair bleached at a salon or there are kits available to do it at home.
If you decide to bleach at home make sure you buy bleach that specifically says facial hair bleach. Regular hair dye will be too hard on your delicate facial skin as facial hair is thin. As with any bleach, read the warnings and check you are not allergic to any of the ingredients before using.
It is best to wear a top you are not worried about staining when bleaching your facial hair. Use gloves and pour some of the bleach powder into a bowl. Now add the liquid as directed.
Use a makeup brush or plastic applicator (often provided) to spread the mixture onto the hair you want to bleach. Leave the bleach on for the time suggested being careful to check often to ensure it is working and that your skin is not inflamed. Often, you may not even need to leave the product on as long as suggested.
Once the bleaching is complete use lukewarm and cotton pads to carefully remove the mixture. After all the bleach is removed, wash and tone your face.

5. Tweeze the hair.

Tweezing is a fast and cost-effective way to remove unwanted facial hair. The results are only temporary. It is especially useful in situations where you just have a few stray eyebrow or chin hairs. Simply pluck the hairs out with a pair of tweezers.
Tweezing also does not usually require a healing period so you can use it before a big event if you notice a stray.
To tweeze, make sure your skin is clean by washing it with warm water. It is also good to use warm water to relax the skin and hair follicle. If you have not exfoliated in a while it is beneficial to do so before you begin tweezing to prevent a build up of dead skin cells around the hair.
Look in the mirror and hold the skin taut. Taut skin will make it less painful to tweeze. Now use the tweezers to grab the hair you wish to remove as close the skin as you can. Remove the hair in the direction it grows.
Do not dig the tweezers into your skin in an attempt to remove super short hairs. Just let them grow a little bit until you can remove normally.
How you decide to remove your facial hair will likely depend on your budget, time constraints and pain tolerance. It is also important to consider how permanent you want you results to be. You may end up trying several of the methods above and might even prefer different methods for different areas of you face.
