Acne happens to almost everyone, and can happen to people of various different ages. You wake up one morning, look in the mirror and… HORROR! You have a large red zit on your face. Don’t panic. There are lots of fast, natural and even inexpensive ways to get rid of a pimple at home, so don’t let yourself panic! In this article we will offer ten great ways to help clear up acne using ingredients that you likely already have in your house.
Disclaimer: These are not meant as a substitute for medical advice. If your acne persists you may want to consult a dermatologist or your healthcare provider.
1. Use lemons.
Isn’t there an old adage “When life gives you lemons make lemonade”? In this case why not use the lemon to help treat your zit!
Use only pure, fresh lemon juice that is free of preservatives. Apply it directly to the pimples before bed and let the lemon juice dry up your acne. Another option, if you do not have sensitive skin, is to combine a tablespoon of lemon juice with a teaspoon of cinnamon powder. Then apply this mixture to affected areas before bed and rinse off well in the morning.
2. Use ice.
Most people have ice in their freezer. This is a very cost effective measure and, obviously, is totally convenient at the same time. This can actually be used to help with your offending acne.
Simply hold ice covered in a clean piece of cloth on the pimple for a few seconds. Then remove the ice, wait a few minutes, and repeat this process. The ice will help to minimize swelling and redness. It will increase the blood flow to the area, tighten the pores, and remove oil and dirt from the skin. You may notice that your skin is clearer during winter months when it is colder: the same idea that makes ice cubes an effective tactic!
3. Try toothpaste.
So you think toothpaste is just for cleaning your teeth? Wrong! It can also be used to reduce the swelling of zits. It is especially beneficial if you try this after the previously mentioned ice method.
Just be sure you use white and not gel paste. Apply the toothpaste to the pimples before bed and wash off in the morning (and, as a side note, another magic power of toothpaste is its ability to polish silver!)
4. Steam your skin.
Steam is great for your skin. It opens up your pores, letting the skin breathe. If you have acne, steam aids in getting rid of the oil, bacteria, and dirt that is stuck in the pores.
Fill a big pot with hot water and let the steam come into contact with your skin for a couple of minutes. Then use lukewarm water to wash your face. Dry off your face and use an oil-free moisturizer.
5. Use garlic.
Garlic can be great in helping to get rid of pimples. It is antifungal, antiseptic, antioxidant, antiviral and also contains sulfur which can help encourage the fast clearing up of acne.
Several times a day, cut a fresh clove of garlic in half and rub it on the zit. Wait five minutes with the garlic on your pimple and then wash your face using lukewarm water. Eating garlic can also be beneficial. Do not consume too much raw garlic as it can cause upset stomach but ingesting one clove of raw garlic a day can assist in purifying your blood.
6. Use baking soda.
Baking soda is inexpensive and most people likely already have a box in their cupboard. It can be used to help eliminate acne by exfoliating the skin to get rid of extra oil, dead skin cells and dirt.
Twice a day, combine one teaspoon of baking soda with either some water or lemon juice to create a thick paste. After washing your face, leave your skin a little bit moist and put the paste on your acne. Let it dry for a few minutes and wash it away with warm water. Since baking soda can be drying and may cause irritation it is important not to leave on for too long.
7. Cucumbers can help.
Cucumber can help to cool and soothe the skin and is an excellent source of vitamins A,C, E, chlorophyll and potassium.
Soak pieces of cucumber in water for approximately an hour to transfer the nutrients into the water. Then strain the water to either drink or wash your face with. Another option is to grind up a cucumber to make a mask which can be applied to your face to help cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria. Grind the cucumber into a sort of paste and then apply this to your face. Let the mask dry on your skin for fifteen minutes and then wash with warm water.
8. Try papaya.
Papaya contains enzymes which can assist in minimizing inflammation and is a good source of vitamin A. It can be used to help improve the softness and texture of your skin. Crush raw papaya to release the juice and then put the juice on your zits. Wash it away after ten to fifteen minutes.
9. Use tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil is often an ingredient in acne products that are sold. This may be due to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. You can actually just apply a little bit of tea tree oil directly on your skin or mix equal amounts of tea tree oil and water and apply it to pimples. Be sure to only use small amount.
10. Try aloe vera.
Aloe Vera is another common ingredient in skin care products on the market today. You can use it as a daily moisturizer on clean, dry skin. It helps to heal acne scars and reduces dry skin and peeling. It also helps to stop pimples without causing the skin to be oily or dry.
There are many products and medications available to help prevent and heal acne. However, some acne products can be very expensive and may include unwanted side effects. The natural methods suggested in this article can help to ensure you have beautiful, radiant skin naturally by using common ingredients and oils. Experiment with the ideas or combinations of them to determine which work best with your particular skin!
