Dark elbows are typically caused by a buildup of dead skin cells, dirt and even genetics. Dark elbows can be unsightly, and many women feel the need to cover up their arms if they have dark elbows.

To use a lemon to get rid of dark elbows, slice a whole lemon into two and let your elbows or the darkened patches sit on the lemon slices directly for ten to 15 minutes. Afterward, rinse with cool water and pat dry using a clean washcloth. Do this once or twice a day.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is another natural way to get rid of dark elbows. Simply get a leaf of fresh aloe and crack it open. The gelatinous part of the aloe should then be applied over the dark patches on your elbows. Leave it on for ten minutes and rinse it off. Do this once or twice a day.
Mustard Oil
Mustard oil has properties that will help nourish and encourage new skin growth in your elbows. Simply massage mustard oil into your dark elbows until it is fully absorbed in your skin. Do this for ten to 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Do this daily.
Coconut Oil with Lime
Mix half a teaspoon of lime with a teaspoon of coconut oil. Apply the mixture on your dark elbows and leave it to be absorbed into your skin for ten to 15 minutes. Wipe off any excess mixture using paper towels.

Skin Bleach
If none of the natural methods work, you can go and look for a skin bleaching lotion in your nearest drugstore. Ambi Fade Cream and Nadinola Extra Strength Formula are two brands that are said to be extremely effective.
Olive Oil and Sugar
Mix a teaspoon of sugar with a tablespoon of olive oil to make a scrubbing paste. While bathing, rub the scrubbing paste all over the darkened area on your elbow. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. If you don't want to use olive oil and sugar, you can use a loofah instead. Gently rub the loofah across the affected area of your elbow.
Moisturize
After using any of the suggested treatments for dark elbows, make sure that your elbows are always moisturized to prevent darkening. Coconut oil is actually one such moisturizer that you can use, but normal body lotion will do just fine for your elbows.
Sunscreen Protection
Repeated exposure to the sun's harmful rays are also a culprit in making your elbows develop dark patches. When going out where you can get exposed, don't forget to apply sunscreen over your elbows as well as all over your arms.
Other Tips
The advice not to put your elbows on the dinner table has more meaning when you're dealing with dark elbows. Dark elbows can also be caused by friction, so do avoid leaning on your elbows if you can help it. Dry skin in addition to friction can actually hasten making your elbows become darker.
Make sure that you do any of the recommended treatments daily and consistently. These treatments have their own set of properties that help restore dark skin back to their original color. You just have to be a little patient with it.
