Everyone, old or young, has experienced that sinking feeling of waking up to find a new surprise has planted itself on your face. It could be the night before the prom, or the morning of an interview for that great new job. No matter when it happens, it's frustrating and embarrassing. While many think this is a problem that goes away with age, plenty of people in their forties and beyond can testify that it's not a situation limited to youth. Stress, hormones and the daily irritations of life can cause our skin to react in ways we don't like.
So, the question remains: How can we get rid of pimples quickly? If you wake in the morning with a new spot on your face try these steps. First, avoid picking or squeezing at any new blemishes. Take a steamy shower or wash your face with the hottest water you can stand. This will soften the skin and the heat will help any pimples that are close to popping do so on their own. They can also be coaxed along with a little gentle pushing with tissue-covered fingers. Do not squeeze too hard. This can push an infection farther into the skin as well as cause redness and irritation--two things you don't need at this point. Using a cotton swab that has been dipped in a bit of rubbing alcohol or another astringent toner, gently hold the swab to the pimple. This can help dry it out a bit. If the area around the blemish seems red or swollen, apply a bit of hydrocortisone cream. This contains a low-strength anti-inflammatory that reduce some of the inflammation. For good measure many people have success with taking the recommended dose of ibuprofen, or 200 mg. Before you leave for the day, or for girls, before you apply any make-up, dab a bit of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid on the blemish. This will help further dry out the underlying infection. A bit of moisturizer to prevent any unnecessary dryness, a dab of concealer if you'd like and you should be good to go. You'll notice a tremendous decrease in swelling by the end of the day. Pimples generally won't disappear immediately, but they can be greatly diminished.
Another helpful technique, and one that we all have readily available is ice. Ice is often used as a quick remedy to get rid of a pimple quickly. You just need to wrap an ice cube (or crushed ice) in a piece of fabric and apply it on your pimple for about 1 minute. Repeat this procedure a few times in a day to reduce the swelling of your blemish. Honey is another natural anti-inflammatory. Many people have reported success with dabbing a bit of honey on the affected spots, leaving it on for 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime and then gently wiping it away. Leaving it on overnight may be a bit too messy! Pure tea tree oil or products which contain tea tree oil can also help reduce the irritation associated with a pimple.
One of the more unusual techniques involves dabbing a bit of toothpaste on a blemish. Users report that this really does help dry out a pimple quickly--usually just overnight. For especially swollen areas, you may want to dab on a bit of hemorrhoid cream. Again, this product is intended to reduce swelling and inflammation. It works on one part of the body, so there's no reason it can't work on another! Again, leaving some of these products on overnight may be too much for sensitive skin. Leave the product on for a while before going to bed to check for sensitivity. An irritated rash is probably much more embarrassing than a pimple or two.
Certainly the best way to get rid of a pimple quickly is to avoid getting them in the first place. Maintaining a good regimen of morning and evening skin care can go a long way toward preventing pimples. Avoid harsh scrubs and wash cloths. Instead rely on creamy or gel-based salicylic facial cleansers. Using a benzoyl peroxide or a sulfur mask each evening can help prevent pimples from arising during the night. Do not skip using a moisturizer. Many who suffer from acne breakouts are reluctant to apply moisturizer, thinking it will make the problem worse. The effect is really just the opposite. Skin with a good moisture balance is calm, less prone to irritation and less likely to produce excess oil.
Plenty of sleep, a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, a thorough evening cleansing routine and a few tips for emergency pimple attacks, will go a long way toward keeping skin smooth, calm and relatively blemish free. Pimples are a predictable part of life, but getting rid of pimples quickly is possible!
