Thick eyebrows can be a huge hassle. No one wants them, but many of us are forced to deal with those stubborn, excessive hairs that seem to endlessly make an appearance in places we don’t want them. Regardless of your gender, overly thick eyebrows can make you feel less attractive and perhaps even insecure. You just want so desperately to be able to attain those nice, sculpted eyebrows that Emma Watson or Angelina Jolie are rocking with as little effort as possible.
You may feel as though you have tried every eyebrow hair-removal method under the sun, but somehow you are still left fighting to tame those unwanted hairs. Don’t give up yet! There exist countless methods to help you deal with this issue. One (or a combination) of them is bound to work for your stubborn eyebrows. Take a look at these tips, and before you know it, you’ll be rocking eyebrows that will even give Angelina a run for her money.
1. Make a game plan.
It is important for you to think about how you want your eyebrows to look before taking any hair-removal action. This can keep you from overdoing things, which is actually a rather common problem. You don’t want to get rid of your eyebrows altogether?
Ask yourself: do I want to rock bold yet tamed eyebrows like Lily Collins? Or, do I want slightly thinner, seductive eyebrows like Jennifer Lawrence? Your preference on this matter is entirely up to you. Just be sure to think about and envision what you want before doing anything you may regret later on.
Despite the boldness level you may choose, be sure to remember the basic guidelines of the ideal eyebrow shape. Take your tweezers or a thin makeup brush and hold it in a vertical straight line beside your nose. Where the tweezer lands (at about an inch above the corner of your eye) is where your eyebrow should begin. In order to determine where your eyebrow should end, lay the tweezer or brush across your cheek from the bottom of your nose to the outside corner of your eye. Mark these spots with a makeup pencil if needed.
Try one of the following methods with your ideal results in mind.
2. Try tweezing.
Tweezing is the most common method that people practice in order to attempt to tame their thick eyebrows. You have likely tried this method yourself. However, many people fail to follow the necessary steps involved with proper tweezing, and are therefore missing out on the optimal potential of their results.
Before plucking, you want to be sure that your pores are clear. This makes hair removal much faster and easier. With this in mind, try to make time for tweezing after a warm bath or shower. If this is not possible, hold a warm cloth against your forehead for a few minutes before you begin.
Make sure that you have proper tweezers. It is suggested that you use a slanted-tip tweezer for thick hairs and a more pointed-tip tweezer for the thinner ones. Also, it is important that you keep your tweezers sanitized in order to avoid infection.
When tweezing, be sure to grab the hairs at the root, and pull in the direction that they are growing. This method will keep hairs from growing back as rapidly.
Be sure not to over-pluck! This is a very common issue. Some people pluck so excessively that their eyebrow hair stops growing in completely.
3. Try waxing.
Waxing is a great approach to get rid of overly thick eyebrows. It is one of the best ways to keep unwanted hair from returning for days or even weeks at a time. The main benefit of waxing is that the hair is removed at the root, keeping it from popping back up almost immediately afterwards, just like many people may experience with shaving. Waxing can be done at home or by a professional. A professional eyebrow wax can cost anywhere from $5-$20 depending on where you have it done. If you are going to a professional, be sure to discuss with them the eyebrow ‘look’ you are seeking. You don’t want them to misunderstand your vision, as waxing results can last for weeks.
Doing your own waxing can seem intimidating at first, but it shouldn’t have to be! You may fear messing things up or causing yourself pain. Be sure to take your time with the process of first. After a while, it will become like second-nature.
Waxing at home will save you time and money. So, it may be best for you to consider this option. You can get an at-home waxing kit from almost any drug, department or grocery store. They cost anywhere from $7-$50, but can last multiple sessions.
Once you are ready to begin, pull and pin back the hair around your face. You do not want to get wax in your hair, and you need a clear view of your eyebrows.
Brush your eyebrow hairs upwards with a brow brush and trim any hairs that exceed that the natural shape on the top of your brow (keep in mind that this step may not be necessary for you).
Next, clean your eyebrow area. Your waxing kit may come with a special cleaner. If it does not, facial cleanser along with warm water is fine. After cleaning, apply a slight dusting of powder to the area to make sure it is fully dry for the wax.
Apply the wax using the stick applicator from your kit. Be sure to apply it in the direction of the growth of the hair. Avoid applying an overly-thick layer of wax, as excess wax may seep into hairs that you do not want removed.
Place the strip over the wax, leaving part of it sticking out at the end for you to grip onto when removing. Press the strip somewhat firmly to the wax—you want to make sure that it sticks properly.
Once the wax has slightly cooled, it is time to remove it. Grab the end of the strip that is not stuck to the wax. Be sure to pull in the direction opposite to the hair growth—this ensures the best results. Pull off in a rather quick motion.
Repeat these steps until you have reached your ideal brow shape. If there is any wax remaining on your brows, this can be cleared off with baby oil.
4. Try threading.
This method, which originated in Central Asia and India, is becoming increasingly popular in Western culture. It removes the hair at a follicle level, and can be very fast and virtually painless.
To get this treatment done professionally will cost you anywhere from $12-$50, and only takes about two minutes time to complete. Doing this method yourself is not going to be easy or fast right away. It takes a lot of practice and patience to master the technique.
Look up the phrase “how to thread your eyebrows at home” online and check out a tutorial video or two. Watching someone do the technique and explain the process step-by-step will help you to learn and catch on much faster. Soon enough, it will become second nature to you!
If your overly thick eyebrows are having an effect on your self-esteem, there is no need to worry. There are many methods that exist out there that you can get done professionally or even do yourself at home. Try some of these methods on for size and determine which one works best for you. Good luck, and happy grooming!
