Do you have problems with sore joints and tendinitis? Overtime weight training and any other strenuous activities can put a lot of stress on your joints, tendons and ligaments. These activities can really slow down your workouts and progress in the gym. The joints often affected are the weight-bearing joints such as the knees, elbows, hips and the small joints located in your hands.
The pain in these joints is the result of cartilage damage, emerging from the cumulative effects of years of use of the joints compounded by the inability to restore joint cartilage. Joint pain is usually defined as a group of conditions that involves damage to bodily joints. In particular, arthritis is the leading cause of joint soreness in people older than 55 years of age.
There’s arthritis and its most common form, osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease — a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint or age. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormal anatomy may contribute to the early development of osteoarthritis. Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, autoimmune diseases where the body attacks itself. Then there’s septic arthritis, which is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing inflammation. There is also an uncommon form of gout caused by the formation of rhomboid crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This gout is known as pseudogout.
Basic Treatment of Sore Joints
Herbal sore joint remedies have proved to be effective in easing joint pain and inflammation for centuries. Unlike harsh modern drugs that can shock and weaken your immune system, medicinal herbs and herbal remedies soothe and strengthen your entire body and are good for arthritis relief. Here are some of them:
- Drink plenty of water to keep the body clean.
- Drink one tablespoon juice of fresh leaves of bathua everyday on an empty stomach for two to three months. Don’t add anything to the juice and don’t eat anything for two hours before and after.
- Spread warm mustard oil over Indian Madar leaf. Use it to foment the sore joint by spreading it over the affected area and keeping it there for a few hours.
- On an empty stomach, consume three to four walnuts (akhrot) or one fresh coconut.
- Apple cider vinegar has shown to give beneficial results.
- Rub the aching joints with hot vinegar before going to bed.
- Drink a solution of two teaspoons apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey dissolved in a small glass of warm water.
- Mix camphor, methyl salicylate, eucalyptus oil and menthol to make a rubbing mixture for aches and pains.
- Gomukhasana is the most beneficial yogic asana for the cure of joint pains.
- Alternate hot and cold compresses on the painful areas can give you some respite.
- Mix fresh carrot juice with equal parts of lemon juice. Take one large teaspoonful everyday.
Advanced Treatment of Sore Joints
Treatment options vary depending on the type of joint pain and may include physical and occupational therapy, lifestyle changes (including exercise and weight control), medications and dietary supplements (symptomatic or targeted at the disease process causing the joint pain). Arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery) may be required in eroding forms of joint pain.
In general, studies have shown that physical exercising of the affected joint can have noticeable improvement in terms of long-term pain relief. Exercising the arthritic joint is encouraged to maintain the health of the particular joint and the overall well-being of the person.
- Arthritis is a result of the complex interplay among cells called lymphocytes, cells called macrophages and the messenger signals they communicate with, called cytokines. Biologic medications work by targeting these different areas. In essence, they work with laser-like precision on the immune system.Since joint pain is the result of cellular interactions that produce an excessive amount of destructive antibodies, it makes sense that removing some of these toxic influences may make arthritis better. That is the theory behind the use of the Prosorba column for treating rheumatoid arthritis.
- One technique that has proven to effective is the use of spas. The Dead Sea water has a reputation for healing arthritis and has been successfully investigated with healing lasting up to three months. It has two and a half to 10 times as much potassium chloride by weight as sodium chloride and an even greater ratio of magnesium chloride by weight—supplements allegedly needed to treat sore joints.
- There have been closer associations with potassium and joint pain treatment. At one time sulfurated potash was used to combat arthritis. It’s not surprising that it fell into disfavor associated with such a poisonous anion. An anion is a negatively charged substance that neutralizes the positive charge of an ion like potassium. The first person to definitively link potassium to arthritis in no uncertain terms was DeCoti-Marsh in a book published in England in 1957.
- A successful technique was the raw vegetable diet described by Holbrook in Europe during the forties. This diet became quite popular, even though most people must have found it fairly unpalatable. Eppinger hinted that the success of this diet might have been due to its high potassium content. It might have become more popular if a recommendation to use fried vegetables, soup or to drink the boil water had been made, that would have permitted the same potassium intake as raw vegetables.
- The current treatment for joint pain includes the use of aspirin and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. These medications provide only short term benefits for relief of both the pain and inflammation.
- There is a natural substance found in high concentrations in human joint structures known as Glucosamine. Numerous double blind studies have shown that Glucosamine produces better results in the treatment of joint pain than traditional drug therapy. The main function of glucosamine is to stimulate the manufacture of substances necessary for joint repair.Glucosamine is a well-tolerated, natural treatment. There have been no reported adverse reactions. In rare instances, some gastric discomfort was reported but was easily relieved by taking the supplement with food.
- Supplementing your meals with a Chondroitin and MSM supplements can also work great against joint pains. Even if you frequently have pain in your elbows, knees and shoulders, the supplement should help you build your strength on these areas. After only a couple weeks of taking these supplements, you shouldn’t have any problems with joint pain ever again. You’ll be able to train harder and lift heavier weights.
- Another form of non-drug treatment that does have a body of proper research to support its efficacy is marine oil, from both fish and the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus). Diets high in marine oils from cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna have been shown to reduce the inflammation of joint conditions.
- If you’re having a high level of joint pain, then your daily routine is probably way too much and too fast. If you haven’t been a runner in the past, you need to gradually build up your muscle and joint strength instead of pushing it so hard. Also, if you have joint problems (like ankle problems), you would be better off with a lower-impact kind of exercise—biking, swimming and other activities that don’t put too much stress on your knees and ankles. To help treat the damage, you can take Advil (ibuprofen) or Aleve (naproxen), but be sure to follow the dosage on the package. Take it regularly (according to directions) to decrease the inflammation and pain—it doesn’t work as well if you only take it once you have pain.
- How about trying a natural supplement? Try one with no hidden ingredients, targeted at joint pain and inflammation such as Flexnow joint formula. It’s all natural and has helped a lot patients through the years. Since Flexnow has one, all-natural ingredient, you can freely recommend it to friends and family guilt-free, without worrying about unnatural side effects.
Reduction of joint pain is basically associated with raised levels of synovial fluid TNF-sRII and IL-1sRII as well as raised plasma levels of IL-1ra and IL-10. Decreased erythrocyte sedimentation rate was associated with decreased tenderness to digital palpation.
Reduced general joint pain intensity is associated with reduced plasma levels of IL-6 and C-reactive protein. As such, systemic treatment with a combination of infliximab and methotrexate will reduce joint and muscle pain in RA in association with an increase in anti-inflammatory cytokines and receptors in synovial fluid and plasma.
