What Are Spots?

Spots (also known as zits, pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and acne) develop when one of the hair follicles in your skin becomes clogged.

Your hair follicles are the microscopic holes in your skin that hair grows from and each follicle contains a tiny oil gland or sebaceous gland that produces an oil known as sebum. Sebum is transported out of the follicle via the hair and is deposited on the skin – this oil is important as it lubricates and hydrates the skins exterior.

It is common for follicles to get blocked with microscopic debris such as dead skin and when this happens the sebum produced by the sebaceous gland cannot exit the follicle. This results in the follicle widening as it fills with sebum and the skin around the follicle raising to form a spot. It can also become red and inflamed and in some cases can become infected with bacteria, which can make the soreness and inflammation worsen.

You will need:

  • Water-based soap or cleanser
  • Mint toothpaste (not the gel variety)
  • Rubbing alcohol / Surgical Spirit
The procedure:
  1. Wash your face with the soap / cleanser and warm water, then dab dry with a soft clean towel.
  2. Apply a dab of toothpaste to the spot and leave for around 5-10 minutes.
  3. Gently clean off the toothpaste, rinse and dry.
  4. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol / surgical spirit to the spot to dry the skin.
After going through the process above, give the alcohol around 5 minutes to absorb into the skin, then go to bed. By morning, the spot should be gone.
