How to protect yourself from Hornets. Hornets are a variety of wasp very similar to the common wasp ‘yellow jacket’. They are both from the same subfamily but there are differences in appearance and habit. Hornets are the largest among the social insects such as bees, ants, termites etc. Some species of hornets can grow up to 2.2 inches in size.
Yellow jackets are comparatively smaller in size. Hornets are also distinguished by its vertex width from other wasps. There is also a difference in color and also how it hunts for food. Hornets are not as aggressive as yellow jackets but hornets look much ferocious because of its big size. Hornets are found to be more territorial. Bald faced hornets are the most commonly found hornet in USA. Actually it is a more close relative to yellow jacket than it is a hornet. The reason for calling it as a hornet is because of the way they build nests aerially like hornets.
Hornet sting can be really painful especially to humans. But how venomous they are, varies depending on the species. Some of them cause adverse allergic reactions in some persons. There are some varieties of hornets, whose venoms are really fatal if not given immediate medical attention. These wasps do not die after stinging humans like some of the honey bees. Yellow jackets as it relies
mostly on human food and waste have more human contact than hornets. Hornets mainly rely on live insects such as bees for its prey. Hornets generally do not attack humans unless they are alarmed or they feel a threat to their nest. Once they are in defense mode, like bees they mobilize their entire force and the result cannot be good. If a hornet is attacked near its nest, it is very likely that you will be attacked by the full force of its army as the hornet in trouble sends out signals to the nest which arouse the whole army.
It becomes really critical in some cases to remove the nests built by these pests at the earliest possible. These nests are usually found attached on trees or small bushes or even on buildings. There are many different kinds of sprays available in the market. You can use a pressurized can wasp killer spray and make a direct spray into the nest opening. There is usually only a single hole or opening to the nest where these hornets enter and exit. It is better to be adequately prepared with proper protective clothing for your whole body before you do this process. There are sprays available which can be sprayed almost up to 15 feet into the air. It is better to avoid doing this in the daytime. But when you are doing it at dark, be prepared with enough light sources. While you are trying to destroy the hornet nest, do so only from far .You have to be really careful not to damage any part of the nest as that will arouse the hornets and will attack you very badly. Most of these sprays kill them in an instant, so the few who is flying away will soon die. But it is better to be prepared anyways even to run if needed.
If you don’t want to carry out this some what risky process, there are some more easy options you can resort to. The first thing you can do is to clean out your yard or garden where there is a possibility of hornet nest. These hornets, though they usually prey on live insects are attracted to high protein food. So be sure to clean the yard off from any such things like pet food or mean remaining or any such things. There is a definite possibility of finding these in garbage cans or garbage pits, so better to keep these buried under or sealed well. It is good to put boric acid powder in the garbage cans very often to keep the hornets away.
Another option is to catch the hornet queen wasp using a trap especially built for catching wasps. Usually queen wasp is the one who starts building the nest. So we can catch the queen with a trap containing attractive food like meat and juice. Once the queen is caught, the entire nest building will be over. Since the queen hornet usually starts building the nest in early spring time, it is better to put this trap before the spring begins. As it is not poisonous in any way it’s very safe to use.
