How to Get Rid of a Cowlick

The Origin of the Problem

When hair creates a pivot, it is usually distributed from one point to every possible direction. A cowlick is then produced. If your crown is receding at the temple hairline, you are most likely to experience this erratic hair pattern. Some cowlicks form in the crown area while others are found along the nape and face areas.

In most cases, the majority of the people who have cowlicks are born with them. However, those who are undergoing chemotherapy also develop cowlicks because of hair regrowth. Everyone will get a cowlick at one point in their lives. In fact, countless celebrities have cowlicks, including supermodel Claudia Schiffer who does not only have one, but two cowlicks along her hairline. The good thing is that Claudia Schiffer uses her cowlicks to compliment her look. She grows her cowlicks longer to be able to style them. If a famous celebrity can get away with highlighting these erratic hair tufts, you too can surely do it.

Do Something About It

There are two ways to deal with this problem. You can use styling products matched with corrective hairstyling to tame the targeted unruly hair. You can also undergo waxing, electrolysis or plastic surgery as long as you have enough money.

Circumstances will guide you in choosing how to deal with your hair problem. For example, if you are capitalizing on your image and physical appearance for your career, then drastic measures must be considered. If not, you can tame your cowlick with the right hair accessories, styling tools and appropriate hairstyle, all of which involve very minimal hassle on your part compared to undergoing surgery.

You need to know and understand the dynamics of your cowlick before you choose a treatment option perfect for your needs. With enough knowledge about your own problem, you can adjust to the challenges your hair gives you.

Waxing and Electrolysis

You need to locate your cowlick first to determine whether or not it is easy to deal with. Consider yourself lucky because today, there are so many innovations available on the market. Celebrities and movie stars resort to plastic surgeries and hair waxing electrolysis if the need arises. If you want to remove your cowlick permanently too, then you can try surgery. You don’t need to worry about getting your money’s worth because documented cases show that surgical techniques, electrolysis and waxing effectively control unruly hair patterns.

Waxing cannot remove cowlicks permanently. Then again, if you go through waxing for a couple of sessions, the hair that grows usually becomes softer, making your cowlick easier to style. The same is true with electrolysis. While this isn’t a permanent solution to your problem, you can always go through this technique again when your heinous hair strands grow back over time.

Keep in mind that these three options have drawbacks. These treatments are pricey and you would have to undergo multiple sessions. These techniques can also cause temporary discomfort and pain.

The Role of Good Stylists

Not everyone wants surgery, electrolysis or waxing. In fact, the word “waxing” alone makes most people cringe. If you're not ready to take the expensive path, then you should know the role of your hair stylist and how he or she can help you with your problem.

Haircuts – If your cowlick is located on your head, your hair stylist may give you a haircut that adds weight to the head to hold your cowlick down. You don’t have to get a haircut that everybody wears. A good hair stylist can custom design a style that can match your problem. He or she will work it into your overall look, image and style.

If your hair is curly or wavy, then short layers that are placed at the right areas in your hair will incorporate the unruly hair into your overall style. You can also relax or perm your hair if you are willing to put chemicals into it.

Products – Hair care products will not permanently remove your cowlick, but your stylist may recommend styling aides like pomades, greases and creams to hold your stubborn hair tufts down. If you want to go for this option, apply the product of your choice to the root of your cowlick and to the areas around it. Redirect your cowlick with your fingers. The role of styling products is to hold the cowlick in place. Applying too much of any of these products is not always good because aside from putting too many chemicals on your hair, a small amount of product goes a long way.

So Long, Cowlicks

Blow dryers, perfectly shaped bangs, mousses, great hairstylists, corrective hairstyles, straightening gels, electrolysis - who says you can’t tame stubborn hair? Your hair world doesn’t end with a cowlick. You now have a choice. You can forget these tips and brood over bad hair days or get up from your bed and do something about it.
